On this assignment for my digital photojournalism course the directions were to go the event, observe as much as possible and capture images, then narrow the images down to three that define it the most. Of course an establishing shot would be expected which was followed by action. The event was set up to serve food (pizza, bread sticks, cookies, and a variety of drinks) followed by a two part movie titled "Say My Name" featuring several young African American women telling about their life experiences including some of the women who gave their individual Hip Hope performances after the movie.

Audience members are watching performances by female Hip Hop artists, in the Gold room of the Oakland Center, at Oakland University during the Grrrls at the Mic event on Apr. 5, 2014. The event focused on women in the Hip Hop industry, and attracted both male and female audience members.
The Women and Gender Studies department at Oakland University hosted this event. They welcomed Hip Hop performers who were from an organization located in Detroit, Mich called The Foundation: Detroit Women in Hip Hop. Several women from the Foundation gave a live performance including Ms. Corina in the photo to the right.
